Around 8 p.m. on the evening of Thursday, January 23rd, a 22-year-old named Zachary Castillo was struck by an Adams County Sheriff’s patrol car, on Federal Boulevard close to 56th Ave.
According to the Colorado State Patrol, the sheriff’s deputy was in-route to a service call when Castillo ran out in front of the officer’s car in the southbound lanes of Federal. Castillo was then struck and killed by the officer’s patrol car. The deputy was uninjured in the collision.
While the lights and sirens of the patrol car were not on at the time of the accident, Castillo ran out into the street in front of the car and was not in a crosswalk or at an intersection. He also ran out from a fairly dark area.
The Colorado State Patrol is still investigating the accident.
Pedestrian Accident Statistics
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 30,000 people are killed in traffic accidents each year. Over 4,000 of these unfortunate fatalities are pedestrians.
Obviously, pedestrians are much less protected in the event of a traffic crash than people riding in cars or trucks. Additionally, many drivers are not on the lookout for pedestrians.
Of course, not every fatal accident is caused by negligent driving; pedestrians sometimes behave in dangerous and unpredictable ways, as appears to be the case in this incident. However, it is a sad fact that in some cases, drivers are simply not paying enough attention to the road, and tragedies that could be prevented, are not.
When Negligence Leads to Tragedy
Many car accidents are caused by the negligent behavior of one or more drivers. Generally speaking, negligence refers to behavior that a reasonable person would not engage in. As it relates to driving, this could include driving significantly over the speed limit, running red lights or stop signs, ignoring traffic laws or signs, or driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
While it is often difficult to judge whether an accident was caused by negligence, if you have lost a loved one in a pedestrian accident, it is important to speak with an experienced Lakewood attorney as soon as possible, in order to learn what your options are, and determine the best possible next steps.
