old lady having trouble driving | Colorado senior drivers are at riskSenior drivers may not be the most dangerous type of driver, but they are at an increased risk for sustaining serious and fatal accidents. Due to age-related vulnerabilities, they’re more likely to sustain serious injuries that could be life-threatening. In addition, medical conditions like diabetes and heart disease often make it difficult for them to recover smoothly. Senior drivers have some of the highest crash death rates in the country per miles driven. In 2014 alone, nearly 5,709 senior drivers were killed and an additional 221,000 were injured in traffic accidents across the country.

Aging Issues Can Increase Risk

As the body ages, it can become increasingly more difficult to operate a car safely. This, in turn, can lead to deadly car accidents. Some of the ways Colorado senior drivers are at risk include:

  • 80% of people in their seventies suffer from arthritis. This can make twisting and turning a steering wheel painful and difficult.
  • Weaker muscles as individuals age make it harder to slam on the brakes or turn suddenly in an emergency
  • 75% of seniors are using one or more medications for their health. This can negatively impact their ability to stay alert and focused on the road.
  • Vision difficulties often increase as an individual ages. Glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration can make it difficult to read street signs and recognize dangers on the road.
  • Hearing changes can make it more difficult to hear oncoming traffic, changes in traffic patterns or another driver approaching.
  • Dementia and Alzheimer’s can make it difficult for drivers to make the necessary decisions in traffic or while on the road. It can also make it more difficult to properly interpret street signs.

Colorado’s Requirements for Senior Drivers

In Colorado, every driver over the age of 60 is required to renew their driver’s licenses every five years at their local Department of Motor Vehicles Office. During this renewal, senior drivers will be required to pass a vision test. If they have poor vision, limited mobility, or decreased memory, they may have some restrictions placed on their driver’s license. If a family member believes that their loved one shouldn’t be driving or may be a danger on the roads to themselves or to others, they can request a re-examination of the senior driver. Older drivers can also choose to enroll in a driving refresher course to enhance their skills.

I don’t know where I would be without the Law Offices of Robert Paysinger. It was a very emotional experience, and I feel as if I owe Mr. Paysinger my life! The other lawyers would promise everything, but it was only here that I felt his integrity and willingness to live up to his word. He and the paralegals were so incredibly helpful throughout the strenuous process of my case. Going through a lawsuit is an emotional roller coaster, but whenever I was confused they would sit and explain everything in terms that I could understand. They provided an emotional support and treated me like family. It’s never about the money there, but about you, if you are upset they will do everything to help you, and work extremely hard for you. They are extremely honest and straight forward. I would recommend Mr. Paysinger to everyone, because they truly and genuinely care about you.
