What effect has the COVID-19 pandemic had on road safety? People across the country have been in quarantine, and traffic in many places has dropped off considerably. Many of us are limiting our trips to the occasional run to the store or to pick up other supplies, and many of us find ourselves now working from home, or even without a job at all.
Once the data has been assessed, many assume we will see a drop in the accident statistics when compared to previous years, and that maybe one small, and unexpected positive outcome from this very difficult time.
But there have been other effects on road safety in the United States that you might not have considered, some positive, but some not.
Infrastructure Resources Have Been Reallocated
Communities across the nation have had to put resources initially designated for repairs to infrastructure, highway repairs, and public safety information advocacy, on hold due to the pandemic.
Resources for many towns and cities are limited and must be allocated carefully. The pandemic has decreased the public’s use of many roads and bridges, and that, along with the current uncertainty around what the length of the pandemic may be, has caused many policymakers around the country to put previously planned projects on hold.
More Pedestrians and Bicyclists Mean More Risk
Many of us, finding ourselves bored and restless after months stuck in our homes, have turned to bicycling and walking as both ways to get exercise, but also ways to relieve our boredom. And that’s a great thing. Both are excellent ways to get exercise and fun ways to be outdoors.
But with more people on the street whether on bike or on foot, the chances of there being a pedestrian or bicycle accident with a motor vehicle increase. That may be especially true now, when social distancing guidelines motivate all of those people on the road, to also try and avoid getting too close to each other. Often, this leads to more pedestrians and bicyclists being in the street, and though car travel is down, it’s not gone altogether, there are still people driving. And this mix of circumstances could mean an increase in these types of accidents.
Strained Emergency Resources
In many parts of the U.S. emergency medical resources have been greatly strained. The sometimes devastating effects of Covid-19 have necessarily tied up important life-saving equipment in emergency rooms all over.
This unfortunate side effect of the pandemic means that there are fewer resources available for all of the regular, everyday emergencies we see in normal years, such as car accidents. This lack of resources may mean that some people may not receive the care they need, and there may be fatalities that would have been avoidable in other, less chaotic years.
We don’t know for sure when this national emergency will be over, or how it will change us as a society overall once it is, but the potential for a positive rethinking of how and why we create policy in this country may end up having positive benefits we can’t imagine today.

I don’t know where I would be without the Law Offices of Robert Paysinger. It was a very emotional experience, and I feel as if I owe Mr. Paysinger my life! The other lawyers would promise everything, but it was only here that I felt his integrity and willingness to live up to his word. He and the paralegals were so incredibly helpful throughout the strenuous process of my case. Going through a lawsuit is an emotional roller coaster, but whenever I was confused they would sit and explain everything in terms that I could understand. They provided an emotional support and treated me like family. It’s never about the money there, but about you, if you are upset they will do everything to help you, and work extremely hard for you. They are extremely honest and straight forward. I would recommend Mr. Paysinger to everyone, because they truly and genuinely care about you.
