According to a study done by the American Automobile Association in 2019, almost 70% of Americans believe that it is unlikely that a stoned driver will be pulled over and arrested by the police for driving while high.
Additionally, roughly 14.8 million motorists admitted to getting behind the wheel within an hour after ingesting marijuana, over a 30 day time period. Millennials were the most likely to drive within an hour of smoking pot, according to the survey, followed by members of Generation Z. Also, men were 3% more likely than women to drive shortly after smoking weed.
The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety’s Executive Director, Dr. David Yang, explained in a statement about the results that: “Marijuana can significantly alter reaction times and impair a driver’s judgment. Yet, many drivers don’t consider marijuana-impaired driving as risky as other behaviors like driving drunk or talking on the phone while driving. It is important for everyone to understand that driving after recently using marijuana can put themselves and others at risk.”
Jake Nelson, AAA Director of Traffic Safety and Advocacy, points out that law enforcement agencies are becoming more sophisticated in the ability to identify drivers who are marijuana-impaired, and that given the serious consequences often resulting from drugged driving charges, “the consequences are not worth the risk.”
Driving High vs Driving Drunk
One of the reasons that many of those drivers who don’t believe they’ll be arrested for driving while stoned feel that way, is because they don’t believe that marijuana use affects their driving skills.
According to another study of marijuana users who consume and then drive their vehicles, 77% believe that it doesn’t change the way that they drive, with 16% believing that it actually improves their driving by making them drive slower.
While available data does suggest that the chances of being involved in a motor vehicle accident directly after consuming marijuana are much lower than the accident rates for people who are drinking and driving, it is still true that marijuana can impair your motor skills and your judgement.
And when you’re behind the wheel, it’s never a safe idea to impair your skills in any way. Remember, if you feel different, you drive different. Please drive safely.
