On Monday, April 8, 2019 an Aurora man was killed in a hit and run accident by a suspected drunk driver. The man was walking across Colfax Avenue just west of a crosswalk when he was hit by a drunk driver and thrown 30 yards to the side of the road. The driver of the vehicle immediately fled the scene of the crash. The injured pedestrian laid on the ground for nearly 20 minutes after the accident before he was eventually found. He was taken to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The hit and run driver ran from the scene of the accident but then returned 30 minutes later. Investigators believe that the driver was speeding at the time of the accident and that he was under the influence of alcohol as well. He was arrested for hit and run resulting in death and after the toxicology reports are obtained, he may face additional charges.
Hit and run crashes are most definitely trending in the wrong directions. According to AAA, hit and run accidents are at an all time high. In 2016, the last year for data, 2049 people were killed in hit and run crashes. This was a 62% increase from 2009. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has said that 2016 was the deadliest year since they began compiling statistics. Of all fatal hit and run accidents, 65% of the victims were pedestrians or cyclists. This is due to a number of reasons, including poor and aging pedestrian infrastructure and increased distracted driving.
Since 2006, Colorado hit and run deaths have increased a staggering 80%. The state ranks 23rd in the country for hit and run fatalities. To combat this, Colorado is the only state in the country to have set up the Medina Alert system. The Medina Alert system works similarly to the Amber Alert system. When a hit and run accident occurs, the public is notified, so they can help the authorities locate the driver quickly.
To reduce the risk of being in a hit and run crash, AAA recommends that all drivers take the following precautions:
- Be aware – look out for pedestrians and cyclists at all times, even when you’re not approaching a crosswalk
- Don’t drink and drive– alcohol is a serious factor in many hit and run accidents
- Be patient – speeding is another factor in numerous hit and run crashes
- Don’t drive distracted – keep your eyes on the road at all time and avoid driving distracted. Even taking our eyes off the road to send a single text can result in a deadly crash.
