Thanksgiving will soon be upon us, and the holiday season will officially commence. It’s a wonderful and cherished time of the year for many, one filled with family, friends and celebrations.
More than 100 million people are expected to be traveling in the United States for end-of-the-year festivities. That means a lot of drivers on the road. And because many of those drivers will be going to and from places where they’ll be reveling in seasonal cheer, that means a number of them will not be driving sober.
That’s a serious problem, because an increase of people on the road, and an increase in the number of people driving intoxicated, is a combination that has proven itself for years, to be quite deadly. In fact, holiday drunk driving accidents take hundreds of lives each year. Learn about holiday season drunk driving accident statistics below.
Holiday Drunk Driving Accidents by the Numbers
Every year in the United States, during the holiday season, hundreds of lives are lost due to the actions of intoxicated drivers. In 2016, in December alone, 3067 people died in car accidents. Of that 3067, 25% of those fatalities were due to accidents caused by a drunk driver. That is 781 lives lost unnecessarily in tragically avoidable accidents.
From 2012-2016, almost 14,500 people lost their lives in traffic accidents in the month of December. 28% of those fatalities were due to drunk driving accidents. Deaths stemming from alcohol related car accidents during the holiday season, has in fact become so predictable that highway patrol departments in states across the country often issue fatality estimates, which are often sadly accurate.
How to Avoid Accidents
So how can you protect yourself and your family, as well as protect others, when driving during the holiday season? A few common sense tips can help improve the odds that you’ll get where you need to go, safely:
- Don’t drive – Of course this isn’t always possible, but when it is, remember that you can’t get injured in a car accident if you aren’t on the road. Avoid driving unnecessarily. Plan ahead to get what you need, so that you and your family can stay in the warmth and comfort of your home.
- Don’t drive drunk – Don’t put yourself, your family members and the other drivers on the road in danger. Stay sober if you know you’re going to be traveling, and if you are going to drink, designate a sober driver that will make sure everyone gets home safely, or call a cab or a rideshare service.
- Be a good host – If you’re planning on hosting a party, make sure you provide your guests lots of food to help them from over-imbibing. Is it going to be a rager of a party? Then make accommodations in your home so that intoxicated partiers can stay there instead of drive.
- Learn to spot intoxicated drivers – If you do have to drive, learn how to recognize a driver who may have had too much to drink. Typically these drivers will operate their automobiles in an erratic and clumsy way. They may respond slowly to traffic signals and the like, and they may even being barely avoiding hitting objects with their car or driving on the wrong side of the road. Give such drivers a wide berth.
The Importance of Contacting an Attorney
If something unfortunate does happen, and you get injured due to the negligent actions of an intoxicated driver, it’s important to realize that you have rights. Contact an experienced and caring attorney as soon as possible. They’ll be able to assess your situation and let you know what your legal options are.
