Colorado is home to some of the most spectacular motorcycle rides in North America. Anyone who has had the opportunity to cruise along through the breathtaking scenery that Colorado has to offer can tell you, there aren’t many places that compare to riding in Colorado. With the summer months upon us, the warmer weather inspires riders everywhere to hit the open road. But before you take off on that epic Colorado road trip this summer, do you know whether you have enough insurance, and how much does it cost to insure a motorcycle in Colorado?
How Does Colorado Measure Up?
Depending on the state you live in, the cost of motorcycle insurance can vary greatly, with some states paying more than double the cost of riders in other states. Fortunately for Colorado motorcycle riders, the state sits nearly exactly at the national average in terms of insurance costs across all 50 states.
Colorado’s yearly average motorcycle insurance is $534, only 3% higher than the national average of $519 per year in 2019. The range of insurance costs between states is very wide. Louisiana is home to the highest yearly insurance rate, at $896, while North Dakota has the lowest overall rate at $283.
What Factors Will Increase Your Motorcycle Insurance?
In addition to what state you live in, there are a variety of additional factors that will affect your motorcycle insurance rates. Insurance companies calculate rates by considering a multitude of risk factors, including the age and experience level of the rider. The following factors are considered when calculating insurance premiums:
- Age of the motorcyclist
- Years of driving experience
- City of residence
- Driving history
- Type of motorcycle being insured
- Amount of coverage being purchased
Taking additional rider training, safety and certification courses may help lower a rider’s yearly rates.
Minimum Insurance Requirements
Drivers of all types of vehicles in Colorado are required to carry liability insurance. Motorcycle riders in Colorado must carry at a minimum:
- $25,000 for death or bodily injury per person
- $50,000 for death or bodily injury involving two or more people per incident
- $15.000 for property damage or destruction per incident
In the event of an accident, these minimums will be met and exceeded quickly. Motorcyclists should consider additional insurance, especially to protect themselves from Underinsured Motorists or Uninsured Motorists (UM/UIM) on the road. UM/UIM insurance will protect riders if they’re involved in a hit and run, or an accident with a driver that doesn’t have insurance.
