29-year-old Denver resident, William Lloyd Jockey-Szilagji, was sentenced earlier this month in a case stemming from a fatal DWAI accident that he caused last year.
On May 19th, 2019, Jockey-Szilagji crashed into a vehicle at the intersection of Alameda Parkway and Kipling Parkway while traveling 105 miles per hour in a stolen SUV. In the vehicle that he crashed into were two Kansas men, 30-year-old Jesse Edmonds and 26-year-old Jacob Bowen, both of whom tragically died in the crash. At the time, Jockey-Szilagyi was high on methamphetamines and running from the police.
At his June 9th hearing he was sentenced to 158 years in prison for their deaths, and 22 other counts including first-degree assault, possession of a controlled substance and aggravated motor vehicle theft.
Impaired Driving Accidents and Lawsuits
Impaired driving is a big problem in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2016 alone, 10,497 people died in impaired driving crashes, and over a million people were arrested for impaired driving.
Impaired driving is illegal in the U.S. and the consequences can be quite severe for those who are arrested for the behavior. But since there will presumably be criminal charges made against those who cause a collision due to impairment, it may be unclear to some what legal options are available to those who have been injured in such accidents.
A civil lawsuit brought against an impaired driver who caused an accident is different from any criminal proceedings that driver may also face. Criminal proceedings are meant to punish an impaired driver, and discourage future impaired driving by that person, as well as by other people.
A civil lawsuit against a drunk driver is meant to recover damages in the form of compensation for the person who was injured in the crash, and in the case of fatal vehicle accidents, for the deceased person’s remaining family.
This is important because it may be the only way that the injured party is able to recover financial damages to help cover the costs of medical bills, damaged property, money lost during time away from work spent recovering from injuries, and other economic damages.
But it’s not just economic damages that can be recovered, the injured party can also seek compensation for non-economic damages such as pain and suffering.
If you’ve been injured in an accident with an impaired driver, it is very important that, as soon as you are able, you contact an experienced and dedicated attorney to learn more about what your legal options are.

I don’t know where I would be without the Law Offices of Robert Paysinger. It was a very emotional experience, and I feel as if I owe Mr. Paysinger my life! The other lawyers would promise everything, but it was only here that I felt his integrity and willingness to live up to his word. He and the paralegals were so incredibly helpful throughout the strenuous process of my case.
