National Child Passenger Safety Week was earlier this month, and it had an important message for parents across the county: Make sure you’re using the right car seat for your child and the right age, and that you’re using it correctly.
Promoted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the public safety awareness campaign seeks to educate parents on the differences between different types of car seats, how to make sure they’re installed correctly, where parents can find testing centers where they can have a certified technician check the installation of their car seats, and also the importance of registering your car seat with the company that made it.
This is an important message to be promoting, because according to NHTSA data almost half of all car seats are not correctly installed, and that is putting the lives of children at risk unnecessarily each day.
Their research suggests that when correctly used and installed, car seats can decrease the chances of a serious, fatal injury in the event of an accident, by as much as 71% for infants and 54% for toddlers.
In 2017 alone, the NHTSA estimates that the lives of 46 children under the age of five, would have been saved had they been properly secured in their car seats. These are avoidable fatalities, and while this is a relatively small number for such a large country, it’s truly a tragedy due to the young ages of the victims
The Right Car Seat at the Right Time
The NHTSA urges parents to remember that, as their children grow and change, the car seat option that is the best and safest option for them, changes as well. Young children should be in a rear-facing car seat for as long as possible, depending on the weight limits recommended by the manufacturer.
After that, they can move to a forward-facing car seat, but it should have both a harness and a tether, as the tether offers a third anchor point that will help keep your child safer, in the event of an accident.
Once they’re too big for that seat, they can move into a booster seat, the final step before they graduate to an adult seat belt. But they should stay in the booster as long as possible, ideally until the child is 4 foot 9.
Regardless of what seat you’re using, you should always register it with the manufacturer so that you are kept aware of important safety announcements issued by the company.
Making Sure the Car Seat is Installed Correctly
Obviously, the seat can’t properly protect your child if it’s not installed correctly. So, the NHTSA has made a number of helpful tutorials available that can show you how to correctly install your particular type of car seat, and carefully walk you through each step of the process.
Not only that, they’ve published an online tool that parents can use to search their geographic area for a car seat inspection station close by, where a certified technician will inspect the car seat, ensure it is installed correctly, and even give you tips for your particular style of seat, all for free.
