distracted female driver about to hit a woman and her two children | October is Pedestrian Safety MonthThe National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced that this October marks the first annual National Pedestrian Safety Month, the goal of which is to remind all of us that ensuring the safety of our roads and sidewalks is a shared responsibility. The campaign also seeks to improve public awareness about the issues surrounding pedestrian safety. This is an important goal since most of us are pedestrians at one time or another.

October is an appropriate month to pick for a couple of different reasons. First of all, the month sees the end of Daylight Savings Time, which means the nights will get longer and it will get darker out earlier. That typically leads to an increase in risk for pedestrians.

Also, Halloween is in October, of course, and statistically fatal accidents increase on Halloween night. In fact, according to a study conducted by AutoInsurance.org, young people under the age of 18 are 130% more likely to be involved in a fatal accident on Halloween nights, than on non-Halloween nights.

As part of National Pedestrian Safety Month, NHTSA will work with agencies across the country to improve public awareness by providing helpful resources such as social media content, safety tips, and data tools local authorities can use to help spread the word. And in each week of October, the agency highlighted specific risky driving behaviors and different ways to improve safety for pedestrians

According to U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao, “With this designation of October as Pedestrian Safety Month, the Department is affirming its commitment to working closely with our state and local partners to make our roads safer for pedestrians.”

The NHTSA provided the following safety tips for both drivers and pedestrians:

Safety Tips for Drivers

  • Always keep watch for pedestrians, especially when visibility is poor.
  • Always expect that someone will be waiting to cross at a crosswalk, and slow down.
  • Yield to people in the crosswalk and give them plenty of space to cross.
  • Don’t speed, especially in areas where there are likely to be children around.
  • Watch for pedestrians when you’re backing up, one may surprise you.

Safety Tips for Pedestrians

  • Use the sidewalk whenever possible.
  • Always cross at designated crosswalks and well lit intersections.
  • Don’t walk distracted, stay alert to your surroundings.
  • Be visible, and don’t assume a driver can see you.
  • Be extra careful in areas where cars exit and enter traffic.

I don’t know where I would be without the Law Offices of Robert Paysinger. It was a very emotional experience, and I feel as if I owe Mr. Paysinger my life! The other lawyers would promise everything, but it was only here that I felt his integrity and willingness to live up to his word. He and the paralegals were so incredibly helpful throughout the strenuous process of my case. Going through a lawsuit is an emotional roller coaster, but whenever I was confused they would sit and explain everything in terms that I could understand. They provided an emotional support and treated me like family. It’s never about the money there, but about you, if you are upset they will do everything to help you, and work extremely hard for you. They are extremely honest and straight forward. I would recommend Mr. Paysinger to everyone, because they truly and genuinely care about you.
