Electric scooters are all the rage these days. Over the last several years, they’ve hit virtually every major city in the United States, including Denver. There is a reason they’re so popular. Electric scooters offer residents and tourists a great way to get around town at a fraction of the cost of other forms of public transportation. They’re a great way to go sightseeing, as well as traveling to and from your work if you live in the city. Unfortunately, they’re also dangerous.
There are five major scooter companies in the United States: Bird, Lime, Jump, Skip, and Spin. Those electric scooter companies provide the scooters in cities. They’re also bound to abide by the city’s laws when it comes to how many scooters they’re allowed to bring into the city or where they’re allowed to park them.
These scooter companies also provide limited instructions on how to stay safe on their devices, which in some people’s eyes, has made the grossly negligent. Currently, Bird and LimeBike are facing class action lawsuits for negligently introducing electric scooters into cities. As a result, people are being injured or killed while riding them.
Scooter Laws in Denver
In January 2019, Denver city officials passed new laws for scooter riders to help protect them from injury. Those rules were added to the other rules and guidelines that were previously established in 2018 when electric scooters were first introduced. Those rules include:
- Scooters are only allowed on the sidewalk if bike lane is not available
- Scooter riders must ride at speeds below 6 mph when on a sidewalk
- Scooter riders must yield to pedestrians
- Scooters must be parked adjacent to bike racks at RTD bus stops only
- Parked scooters can’t impede pedestrian flow
- Scooters can’t be parked anywhere else except bus stops

I don’t know where I would be without the Law Offices of Robert Paysinger. It was a very emotional experience, and I feel as if I owe Mr. Paysinger my life! The other lawyers would promise everything, but it was only here that I felt his integrity and willingness to live up to his word. He and the paralegals were so incredibly helpful throughout the strenuous process of my case. Going through a lawsuit is an emotional roller coaster, but whenever I was confused they would sit and explain everything in terms that I could understand. They provided an emotional support and treated me like family. It’s never about the money there, but about you, if you are upset they will do everything to help you, and work extremely hard for you.
