idea of a car speeding | speeding during coronavirus lockdownBecause of the Coronavirus pandemic, many of us find ourselves stuck at home, and out of our normal rituals and habits. So of course that means there are many fewer cars on the road than normal.

Some drivers are taking advantage of this decrease in traffic as an opportunity to drive faster and more carelessly than they normally would. Police departments in towns across the metro area have reported an increase in high-speed activity, with drivers traveling at shocking speeds, frequently in the triple digits.

According to the Morrison Police Department, they wrote 440 tickets in March, the vast majority of which were speeding tickets. That’s an average of 14 per day, not a small number for a town with less than 500 residents. And this isn’t happening just on the highway, there are numerous reports of people driving in urban areas at reckless speeds.

Speeding is always a dangerous behavior, but it has new implications during the pandemic.

First, police are essential workers and we need them to be out doing their important jobs, even though it’s a risk to them. Everytime a police officer catches someone speeding and is forced to pull them over to issue a ticket, that is an avoidable interaction that they shouldn’t have to engage in, just because a driver wanted to experience the thrill of driving fast.

Also, it’s a fact that speeding is a major factor in car accidents across the country every day. There may be less traffic on the road, but it’s still extremely dangerous to drive at a rate of speed that will limit your reaction time, should the unthinkable occur.

Remember, we are currently trying to keep our hospitals from becoming overburdened due to the pandemic. Speeding drivers will inevitably result in accidents that take up hospital beds, precious medical resources, and will unnecessarily endanger already imperiled health care workers.

Speeding is Dangerous

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, over the last two decades speeding played a factor in roughly a third of all fatal motor vehicle accidents. In fact, in 2018 alone, speeding was responsible for 9,379 deaths.

Speeding isn’t just about breaking the law. There are inevitable factors that are a result of speeding that can contribute to horrible devastation, should something go wrong:

  • Drivers who speed are less likely to maintain control of their vehicle. Vehicles can react differently at higher rates of speed than at lower speeds, and even if you think you can drive like Vin Diesel, most likely, you don’t have the experience to handle vehicles at really high speeds.
  • Speeding reduces the effectiveness of the protective equipment installed in the vehicle to help save your life. So speeding doesn’t just endanger the lives of others, it endangers your own life as well.
  • Speeding decreases the amount of time that a driver has to react to a perceived danger. If a car pulls out in front of you at the last minute, or heaven forbid, a ball rolls out into the middle of the street, having extra seconds to react could make the difference between a near miss and a life-ruining tragedy.
  • Higher rates of speed also equate to deadlier accidents when they do happen. Faster speed means more force, and that results in more devastating accidents.

So, do yourself a favor, and do a favor for our wonderful police departments, slow down. Just because there are fewer cars on the road, that doesn’t mean you have free pass to speed.

I don’t know where I would be without the Law Offices of Robert Paysinger. It was a very emotional experience, and I feel as if I owe Mr. Paysinger my life! The other lawyers would promise everything, but it was only here that I felt his integrity and willingness to live up to his word. He and the paralegals were so incredibly helpful throughout the strenuous process of my case. Going through a lawsuit is an emotional roller coaster, but whenever I was confused they would sit and explain everything in terms that I could understand. They provided an emotional support and treated me like family. It’s never about the money there, but about you, if you are upset they will do everything to help you, and work extremely hard for you. They are extremely honest and straight forward. I would recommend Mr. Paysinger to everyone, because they truly and genuinely care about you.
