Because of the COVID-19 pandemic currently gripping the country, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are recommending that United States citizens stay home and avoid unnecessary travel.
Now that the summer season has started, that news may come as a big disappointment for those who usually use the summer months to go on vacation. Summer vacation is a much loved tradition in the U.S. and a cherished way to relax and refresh ourselves after the cold winter months.
But just because you might not be traveling as much as usual this summer, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t follow some important summer safe driving tips that can help keep you and your family safe, even if it’s just during a short trip to the grocery store or elsewhere in the city where you live.
Keeping Kids Safe
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2019 52 children died due to heatstroke suffered while sitting inside a vehicle. That is one of the highest numbers of these types of fatalities in 20 years.
Children have body temperatures that can increase as much as five times as fast as in adults. And on hot days vehicles can quickly heat up to temperatures that can be very dangerous for kids.
It’s important to never leave a child alone in a vehicle, even if the window is rolled down and the vehicle is running, and even if it’s just for a few minutes. It doesn’t take long for a very dangerous situation to develop.
Another important thing to remember is to always make sure that when you are backing out or pulling into a driveway or parking space that there are no children around your vehicle that you may hit.
Children don’t always pay proper attention to what’s going on around them, especially when they’re caught up in having fun and playing. And because of their smaller stature, children aren’t always easy to see, especially when they might be within your vehicle’s blind spot.
Even a backup camera can miss children who are playing outside of the vision of the camera, but who could possibly run up behind a vehicle that is backing out at the wrong time.
Make sure that you make yourself aware of any possible children in the vicinity of your vehicle, by checking the area around your vehicle for little ones that may inadvertently put themselves at risk of injury.
Always Be Prepared
Taking a few precautions and ensuring that your vehicle is properly stocked with a number of key items can help you make sure that you and your family are driving as safe a vehicle as possible, and should something go wrong, that you have the supplies necessary to meet the challenge.
- Check for recalls: It’s important to check for manufacturer recalls that might affect your vehicle. There are hundreds of recalls issued by manufacturers each year, and often we don’t hear much about them. But these recalls are often intended to address automobile defects that can sometimes cause very serious accidents. Most of the time, the repairs that have to be done to fix these issues are paid for by the manufacturer, so it doesn’t make sense to not take advantage of the opportunity. Websites such as SaferCar.gov enable you to check for recalls for your specific vehicle simply by entering in your vehicle identification number.
- Get your vehicle properly serviced: Scheduling a routine inspection and maintenance checkup for your vehicle before you drive can help prevent disruptive breakdowns and even serious accidents caused by defective or worn parts. Make sure your mechanic checks your tires, battery, lights, cooling system, belts and hoses, and anything else that might affect your vehicle’s performance and safety.
- Stock up on the basics and make sure you’re ready for anything: An emergency roadside kit can help make sure you have the items you need to deal with an unexpected breakdown. Many well-stocked kits can be found for decent prices on Amazon and at other retailers, just make sure they contain the following items at a minimum:
- Tire jack and pressure gage
- Jumper cables
- Basic repair tools
- First aid kit
By taking a few precautionary measures and making sure you remain vigilant and aware of your surroundings when behind the wheel, you can help set yourself up to avoid frustrating inconveniences and even possibly avoid a tragic accident.
