patient showing fractured hand to a doctor | traumatic injuries and fracture complicationsA fracture is simply a broken bone, and most people will experience a fracture at some point in their lifetime. Young children and teenagers are often at the most risk for sustaining fractures because they’re still growing and often very active.

While modern medicine can heal the majority of fractures without complications, there are times when a severe fracture may result in a lifetime of pain, suffering, and medical issues. Learn more about traumatic injuries and fracture complications below.

The risk of complications from a fracture varies with the particular fracture and the site of the fracture. In addition, the quality of care an accident victim receives after an injury can literally make or break their recovery. As with all injuries, prompt medical treatment and care is the key to making a full recovery after a fracture.

Risk Factors for Fracture Complications

Fracture complications can occur to anyone. However, there are some risk factors that can significantly increase your chances of suffering a complication after a fracture. Some of those risk factors include:

  • Age
  • Nutritional status
  • Smoker or non-smoker
  • Alcohol use
  • Diabetes
  • Use of NSAIDS
  • Recent motor vehicle accident
  • Oestrogen-containing hormone therapy
  • Chronic illnesses

Normal Bone Healing

After a fracture, the site of the injury will typically swell. This inflammation will last for approximately 2-3 weeks. During the first 4 to 8 weeks after a fracture, the bone will form a soft callus as the injury site stiffens. A harder callus will form between 8 and 12 weeks which is then visible on X-ray. For adequate healing to occur, however, the fracture site needs stability and proper blood supply to the injury.

Fracture Complications

There are numerous complications that can occur after a serious fracture. Some of those are life-threatening and include:

  • Vascular damage
  • Pneumothorax
  • Pneumonia
  • Thromboembolic disease
  • Compartment syndrome
  • Damage to surrounding tissues
  • Wound infection
  • Fracture blister
  • Fat embolism
  • Shock
  • Osteomyelitis
  • Contractures
  • Joint stiffness
  • Malunion
  • Gangrene

Some of the most common fracture complications are caused by the bone not setting correctly or healing properly. Perhaps the blood flow to the site was limited or perhaps the surgeon didn’t set the bone right. When that occurs, accident victims may experience stiffness, contractures, and loss of mobility in that affected bone for the rest of their lives. They may even experience pain and suffering resulting in an inability to resume their active lifestyle. In some cases, a fracture complication could prevent an accident victim from performing their job.

Roy Miller

I don’t know where I would be without the Law Offices of Robert Paysinger. It was a very emotional experience, and I feel as if I owe Mr. Paysinger my life! The other lawyers would promise everything, but it was only here that I felt his integrity and willingness to live up to his word. He and the paralegals were so incredibly helpful throughout the strenuous process of my case. Going through a lawsuit is an emotional roller coaster, but whenever I was confused they would sit and explain everything in terms that I could understand. They provided an emotional support and treated me like family. It’s never about the money there, but about you, if you are upset they will do everything to help you, and work extremely hard for you. They are extremely honest and straight forward. I would recommend Mr. Paysinger to everyone, because they truly and genuinely care about you.
