The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) reported that there were 3,986 motor vehicle accidents involving a passenger vehicle and a large truck in 2016 on US roads and highways. Trucking accidents are often catastrophic, and the statistics show that the occupants in the passenger vehicles are more likely to be killed than the occupants of the large truck in the event of a fatal accident. In fact, 97% of fatalities related to these types of accidents in 2016 were the occupants of the passenger vehicles.
The sheer size difference between large trucks and passenger vehicles plays a major contributing factor in the increased fatality risk to passenger vehicle occupants. A large truck, especially when carrying a load, can easily weigh 30 times as much as a passenger vehicle. This additional weight makes for much slower braking and stopping times over much longer distances for the large trucks, both of which can be further increased by wet and slippery driving conditions. It’s not just the weight of the truck that makes an accident more likely to have catastrophic consequences; the increased height of a truck, along with the higher ground clearance, puts passenger vehicles at risk for sliding underneath the truck in the event of a collision.
Trucking Accident Injuries
Due to the magnitude of the size difference between cars and large trucks, it’s not surprising that the injuries that occur as a result of a collision are often much more severe than when two passenger vehicles collide. Major injuries from truck accidents include:
- Broken bones
- Back injuries
- Spinal cord injuries
- Organ damage and internal injuries
- Brain damage and head injuries
- Burns and scarring
Trucking Accident Causes
Accidents between passenger vehicles and large trucks can happen for many reasons. Some of the most common causes are:
- Unsafe driving practices by passenger vehicle drivers – underestimating the reaction time required for maneuvering a large vehicle, or overestimating a large truck’s braking and stopping capability
- Driving while fatigued – tired drivers have much slower reaction times
- Insufficient driver training – operating a large truck safely requires special training with specific criteria for training hours and minimum certification requirements
- Poorly maintained vehicles – trucking companies often cut corners when maintaining their vehicle in order to increase profits. They may refuse to change brake pads, use tires with low tread, or skip routine maintenance that would help their vehicles avoid deadly accidents.
- Speeding and overtaking – deadlines and unrealistic delivery schedules may encourage truck drivers to travel faster than is safe for the current road conditions
- Distracted driving – attempting to multitask while driving increases the risk of an accident for passenger vehicles and trucks alike
