Earlier this month, the United States Department of Transportation’s seventh annual “U Drive. U Text. U Pay.” high-visibility enforcement campaign, had law enforcement officers around the country focused on identifying drivers texting, or otherwise using their phones behind the wheel.
The enhanced enforcement campaign ran from October 8th to the 12th, and focused on 18 to 34 year-olds. The Department of Transportation’s efforts centered on giving aid to police officers around the U.S., in their efforts to keep distracted drivers off the road.
Supported by a $5 million dollar national media budget from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the campaign bought television, radio, and digital ads in English and Spanish around the country, and also provided content for local agencies to use to promote distracted driving awareness, including graphics and videos.
It’s an important message for us all to hear because, despite years of efforts to discourage the behavior, and new laws written to punish and prevent the behavior, many of us still decide to engage in distracted driving activities.
And that often results in horrible consequences. In 2018 alone, distracted driving accidents killed 2,841 people, and injured 400,000 people in the United States. That’s a terrible loss of lives and resources, especially considering all of those accidents may have been avoided by a more attentive driver.
According to NHTSA Deputy Administrator James Owens: “When you’re behind the wheel, stay focused on the road in front of you, not your phone. And know that no vehicles on the market today are capable of driving themselves, you’re in charge and responsible for safely operating your vehicle even if it is equipped with the most advanced driver assistance features.”
To help encourage people to keep their full focus on the road, the NHTSA advises that all drivers get into the following habits:
- Shut down and put away all of your electronic devices when you get behind the wheel. Out of sight is out of mind, which will leave you free to watch the road.
- Set a good example for others, especially your children. Make sure any driving-aged children are aware of just how dangerous and destructive distracted driving can be.
- If you see the driver of a vehicle you’re in, engaged in distracted driving behaviors, say something. The life you save could be your own. Be polite, but don’t be afraid to speak out.
- Wear your seatbelt at all times. Seatbelts still serve an important life-saving function in an accident.
- Keep an eye out for pedestrians who may be distracted themselves. Distracted walking is a real problem, so be sure to look out for those who aren’t looking out for themselves.
